'Render' means to coat (brick, stonework for example) with plaster or cement

Problems with Render?
Cracks
If a crack has occurred in the rendering, it could be due to a structural fault. If there are any cracks in the rendering they should be filled.
'Blown' rendering
If you tap an area of render and it feels 'live', it will probably sound hollow. This means the render is no longer bonded to the wall behind. If it has blown, it appears to bulge and should be broken away carefully to remove all loose render. We remove using specialist equipment that does not damage the brickwork or block on the substrate.
If the patching is obvious and in a very public area, it may be worth considering painting the wall after we have fixed the problems for an attractive alternative finish.
When working with painted brick or painted render we would remove at least 80% because you cannot key onto a painted surface.

If small stones or chippings are thrown onto the sand and cement mix already applied to the wall surface, the finish is known as a peppledash surface. Pebbledash is a popular surface coat, consisting of a thick base coat covered with a thin coat of render and small stones.
Cracks
Small cracks should be repaired as with cracks in render.
'Blown' pebbledash
It could be the thin layer has separated from the thick base coat or the whole surface has separated from the wall behind. We would careully break away the loose area and determine the extent of the damage.
If the thin top coat has separated, we would use a stabiliser to seal the surface and repair the surface. If the damage is through to the wall, both surfaces would be replaced in two stages, allowing the thick base coat to dry before applying the thin pebbled layer.
If the pebbledash is to remain unpainted, we would try to use some of the original pebbles as replacements. If the patch is too obvious and in a very public area, it may be worth considering asking us to paint the wall for an alternative attractive finish.

Working with Render
It is essential to remove any dirt or grime from the wall.
We do this in the most efficient way, which is by hosing the area with a strong jet of
water / pressure washer.
If there is evidence of mould growth, we use a fungicidal wash over the area
before starting the repair.
If the brickwork still looks shabby after cleaning off the surface, rendering could
improve the appearance.

Here’s why brick may be a better solution.
- Brick reduces the risk of cracking
Brick walls are solid and stable. Concrete blocks shrink, which can lead to cracks in the render. Fibro and polystyrene are prone to cracking at panel joins which in turn causes the render to crack
.
- Render sticks to bricks
Render sits on the surface of fibro and polystyrene sheets. Moisture under the render will cause it to separate from the sheet, leading to a ‘drummy’ wall. Brick is different. Like paint on a plaster wall, brick absorbs a little of the render, creating a strong ‘key’.
- Brick is ‘bump-proof’
Bricks resist the bumps and thumps of everyday family life. Stray cricket balls, wayward footballs and out-of-control bikes have no effect. Once damaged, a thin, fibro or polystyrene wall is expensive and time-consuming to patch.
- Brick walls are more moisture proof
Behind a brick wall is a cavity that is designed specifically to drain water before it causes a problem. Fibro and polystyrene sheets are fixed directly to the timber frame and don’t have a drainage cavity. This thin barrier is all there is between your house and a rainstorm. If it fails – and it only needs a hairline crack – water may be trapped in the wall and rot may set in.
- Brick is economical
Despite being the premium wall material, bricks don’t come at a premium price. You will pay little or no more for the best.
