Black mould spots are damp mould caused by condensation in homes especially during the winter months when the temperature in our homes is higher than that outside.
A law of nature is that heat will always move from hot to cold and the warm moist air in our rooms will naturally move to pass through the walls and any draught openings to the outside. This can be seen most clearly when you have had a shower with the window closed and then open the window to see the warm air billowing through the open window to escape outside.
In the same example you will see also that water vapour becomes water droplets ie condensation on cold surfaces such as the bathroom mirror and metal taps. Similarly if the walls of our homes are sufficiently cold the water vapour ie moisture will hit the wall and become water droplets in the form of damp patches.
This warm moist atmosphere then provides the ideal breeding ground for damp spores which appear as black or white furry mould spots on walls. Especially prone are ceiling corners as hot air rises and areas around skirting boards or window frames as the break in plaster means these areas are colder than the rest of the walls.
