Condensation Damp on Walls

Posted in condensation damp

We are at that time of year when the temperature is starting to drop and the fabric of our homes begins to cool down and lose the heat accumulated during the summer months. Once the walls have become cold the potential for condensation rises especially when we start to put the heating on.

.

The warm moist air in our homes is supposed to soak into the walls and escape through to the outside as moisture vapour and in this way our homes breathe and remain dry. Unfortunately in cold solid walls this moisture vapour comes into contact with a surface that is too cold and the dew point is reached whereby the moisture transforms from vapour into liquid.

.

This becomes visibly evident as condensation on the walls in the form of damp patches and in extreme cases black spot mould and a musty smell in the air we breathe. The damp spores in the air are also very harmful for people with asthma or chest and breathing problems.

.

The solution is to stop the wall temperature from dropping to the point where the vapour in the air is allowed to become liquid and Multiguard have several ways of achieving this including external wall insulation and an energy efficient heating system that warms the walls rather than the air.
