Cellar or basement tanking has been around a long time and is used to prevent water ingress through walls and is often used in conjunction with a concreted floor. The technique is to use a waterproofing render on the walls and then a plaster finish coat with the aim of holding back the water pressure and preventing water from entering the cellar.

We have received a lot of enquiries from homeowners whose tanking has failed and water is now entering their cellars and blowing the tanking off the walls. As a very general rule of thumb tanking should only really be used in basements that are under very low or indeed no water pressure. In cases where it may be suitable it must be accompanied by a membraned floor with drainage channels.

If you are forcibly holding water back from entering the walls it will find the path of least resistance and enter via the floor or floor/wall junction. In some reported instances it will find a path into an adjoining property and flood their cellar.
