Whilst it is true they do have an effect by drawing moisture out of the air the root cause of the excess moisture and resultant damp is not addressed and as a result as soon as the dehumidifier is switched off the problem returns. The exception to this being when a dehumidifier is used to dry out walls after flooding.

The causes of the excess moisture being generated could be a lack of heating, inconsistent heating, oil fired heating or an excess of insulation combined with a shortage of sufficient ventilation ie the house is effectively sealed.

At Multiguard we deal with another common cause which is related to the condition and type of exterior walls a property has. The walls could be in need of renovation such as re pointing or re-rendering or may need an insulation system fitting to prevent penetrating damp and cold. All of the above will lead to the internal walls being colder than is necessary and the resultant lower dew point will encourage damp and condensation.
