Flooding in a cellar can happen at any time even in a previously dry basement which has never been flooded previously. As an example of this Multiguard were recently called out to a cellar near Thirsk, North Yorkshire which has been under a constant 9 inches of water for the last 10 months including all over summertime.

What makes this case so interesting is that the property is over 150 years old and according to an 80 year old local resident had never previously flooded. The water first appeared in late September 2007 after some particularly heavy rain and each time it is manually pumped out by the homeowner the water re-appears within a few hours to a constant depth of about 9 inches or so.

After much investigation by the owner including Environment Agency, Water Authority, local builder- and even a water diviner!!- the most likely cause established was that:

the already rising local water table was suddenly boosted by the building of a large new property within a 100m radius and whose foundations had inadvertently diverted an underground stream towards the direction of the previously dry property. The result is now a permanently flooded cellar that needs treatment.

Whilst the problem is easily solved by using a submersible pump and drainage system from Multiguard this example does highlight the need to fit a competent and efficient pump system in all cases regardless of whether the cellar is always dry.

You just never know what might occur beyond your control that could cause your cellar or basement to flood and cause a lot of damage.

“Better to be safe than sorry” is one thought that springs to mind.
