I personally just cannot see what all the fuss is about and why no other product range is put under the payback microscope and an ownership decision is based around the return on capital spent acquiring it. When we buy an oven or a condensing boiler or even a car we don’t ask the sales person how long the payback period is !  Similarly when installing new windows how many of us have want to know the payback period and have then based our decision on whether we recoup our money within 10 or 15 years ?

It seems completely irrational and detracts away from the real reason most people take action ie they feel cold in the house, the house is damp or the heating bills are getting ridiculous . In the case of an existing cement rendered property where the render is failing the home owner has got to replace the outside coating anyway !

I believe we should ignore the payback calculation and instead revert to common sense. If the product – wall insulation in this case – solves the problem and is affordable and trustworthy then go ahead and buy it. The fact it is also great for the environment is an added bonus and surely makes the decision simple.

So, forget payback and just ask yourself the following ;

Will it solve my problem ?

Is it trustworthy ?

Does it help the environment?

Can I afford it ?

If the answers to the above are yes, then just DO IT !!

Unfortunately there is still no help for the 24 million homeowners of solid walled properties who are unable to benefit from cavity wall insulation and cannot insulate internally without ripping out and replacing the fitted kitchen, bathroom, bedrooms and staircases !

The answer for this large group of homeowners is to externally insulate their property and by doing so they can reap some tremendous benefits in energy cost savings, reduced maintenace costs and instant appreciation in value of their property. What about the cost though ? This question has been addressed in detail by lots of respected bodies but in particular The Energy Saving Trust, who have come up with some interesting figures that show the uniquely incredible value for money offered by external wall insulation.

According to the Energy Savings Trust an average 3 bed semi would save a minimum of £380 per year at current energy costs of 3.06p pkwhr. They also calculate for a rendered/pebbledashed property the marginal cost of fitting External Wall Insulation to be £1900 ie an incredible payback time of about 5 years or less if energy costs go up again.
