The principle is that the stone is heated by an electric element running unseen through the body of the marble or granite and this heats up the stone using very little electricity. The hot stone then radiates heat back into the room in the form of light rays that directly warm people and objects.

When the room reaches the desired temperature the granite or marble heaters are switched off. However, the thermal mass of the stones means that they continue to release heat into the room for up to 2 hours despite not being switched on or using any power. Contrast this to a standard radiator that becomes cold very quickly and drops the room temperature as sharply.

This warming effect from the sun’s invisible light rays is known as far infrared or radiant heat and has been replicated for thousands of years as an incredibly eficient heating system. The ancient Greeks and Romans used to build fires under raised floors and the heat from the fire would be absorbed by the stone or tiled floors and then be released into the room in the form of radiant heat. They also designed hollow wall sections and flues built at the base would channel the fire’s heat up into the walls and in turn heat these as well.

In the Far East the Koreans were masters of radiant heat and used a similar system to the Romans but with a bed of stones as the heat store. In Eastern cultures this is why they  walk around bare footed and sit and sleep on the floors.

In Europe we have used the same science in cooking with tile stoves and more recently using charcoal briquettes when barbequing. The barbeque coals continue to emit a lot of heat long after the fire has gone out and the food is cooked.

Infrared heating panels use a special glass, ceramic or natural stone and granite as the heating conduit. The electric power is used to heat up the panel and this in turn then emits heat in the form of lightwaves . This heat is a radiant heat and this means it directly heats people and walls and furnishings firstly and the air secondly ie directly opposite to traditional UK convection heating which heats the air first.
