Re-pointing of stone and brickwork is a crucial part of a wall’s ability to breathe and remain damp free. It is vital the work is carried out by a skilled tradesman using the correct materials and selecting the right style of pointing for the the stone or brickwork.
At Multiguard we only carry out correct re-pointing on stone and older, softer brickwork that incorporates the following:
1. We do not use a cement based mortar as this will crack and hold water in the stone and brick. This leads to a damper wall and eventual spalling or blowing of the stone and brick fronts as all moisture is forced out through the faces and none via the pointing.
2. We always use a good quality lime mortar that is softer than the wall material and allows the walls to dry out by releasing trapped moisture.
3. We rake out the old failed mortar to a depth of at least the width of the pointing to a minimum 15mm
4. We never use “ribbon pointing” whereby the pointing stands proud of the stone/brick face as this holds water and looks ugly as well.
5. We always point to a maximum of flush with the wall face or even better slightly recessed.
6. We take care when raking to ensure no damage to the stone or brick edges occurs.
