It seems our ever growing lobby for more focused resources to be assigned to insulation of solid walls is attracting some political heavy weights. The much respected and admired Vince Cable – he seems to cross the political divide when it comes to serious comment – recently used his Mail on Sunday column to argue the case for solid wall insulation.
..
He asserted the only realistic way to achieve a 90% target reduction in co2 from domestic homes by 2050 is to attack the present housing stock of inefficient homes and target them for wall insulation. Obviously well informed , he pointed out the greatest energy and emissions savings would be to insulate the walls of ” hard to heat “ homes of which we have around 6 million. This was on the basis of up to 45% of all heat loss occurring via the walls.
.
He called upon the Government to be far more proactive in this area and especially as it would create a lot of new long term jobs at a time when such jobs are sorely needed. The cost savings in benefits added to the increase in tax revenues from the newly employed would pay for an increase in Government subsidy to encourage greater action in this critical area.
