There has been and continues to be a lot of publicity surrounding solid wall properties and the need to insulate the walls. Such walls can be responbsible for 35% to 40% of heat loss in a home and an average semi emits around 2.5 tonnes of CO2 a year.

Whilst cavity walls, boilers and loft insulation attract grants which subsidise the cost up to 100% there are currently no grants available for solid wall insulation to any private home owner nor any in the immediate future that we are aware of.

When you consider that external wall insulation delivers the greatest energy and carbon savings of any home insulation then it is scandalous that no funding is available. Whilst you can get a grant of up to £2500 for solar water heating you get nothing for external insulation and yet solar water heating saves less than a third of the energy costs that external wall insulation does. Additionally solar also reduces carbon emissions by less than half the reduction gained through insulating solid walled properties.

If solar heating is deemed worthy of a grant – which it definitely is – then surely external insulation deserves to attract at least the same level of grant funding for conscientious private home-owners.
