Solid wall insulation is rather more difficult to undertake than the quick and relatively cheap method of cavity wall insulation as there are no cavities to infill and the homeowner faces two choices:
1.Insulate internally by affixing insulation boarding on the internal walls or
2.Insulate externally using boards and render systems or brick tile slips
The internal option is often impractical unless the interior has been stripped of all furnishings and is just a shell. In the vast majority of cases staircases are in place along with fitted kitchens and bathrooms and coving or skirting has also been fitted. To strip all of these away to leave clear access to the wall surfaces is not feasible as well as being incredibly expensive.
If the interior has been stripped completely for refurbishment then it becomes easier to insulate but some disadvantages that arise are that room sizes will be reduced on all sides and the external walls are still open to further weather damage.
It is therefore often easier and far more beneficial to fit an External Wall Insulation System with minimal disruption, increased aesthetic appeal and of course weather protection as the substrate is cloaked all round.
