Timber Frame External Wall Insulation

Posted in timber framed external insulation

Timber framed construction is seeing an increase in popularity due in part to its lower build cost and quicker building times . There are many thousands of existing timber frame houses that were built over 25 years ago and for those that were finished in a render as opposed to a brick outer skin there has never been a better time to renew the render and simultaneously take advantage of being able to boost insulation.

By replacing existing cement renders with a lime render you are increasing the ability of the walls to breathe and also removing any cracking or movement problems as lime render is flexible and self- healing when it comes to cracks.

If you take the opportunity to add 100mm of natural hemp or sheep fleece behind an insulating wood fibre board the walls will achieve an incredible U value of 0.26 ie almost 50% more efficient than a brand new build meeting today’s strict insulation target of 0.35 !!

The cost savings on energy consumption are enormous and there will also be a considerable saving on CO2 emissions as well. As an added bonus of course your property will gain in value as a result of the far lower heating costs and better internal air quality and comfort.
